How to build your next WordPress website with least plug ins

wordpress-plugins-broke-my-website Too many cooks spoil the cook. In the same way , “TOO Many Plug Ins” can spoil your next or your old WordPress websites. We know that WordPress has offered you with this amazing functionality of plug ins but some people just exploit this beautiful thing. Let us see few daily instances where people just use plug ins

  1. Hero Slider / Home Page Slider
  2. Upload a logo on WordPress backend
  3. Uploading a Favicon
  4. Creating Custom Post Types
  5. Google Analytics Code
  6. Testimonials
  7. Granting Custom Website Access

So these are just the few instances where people use plugins. There might be many other instances when people might use plug ins. Now lets understand why it is not a good practice to use plug in for each and everything.

Why you shouldn’t use Plug Ins for everything

  1. Most of the plug ins will just not do what’s actually needed. You might think that Plug In is doing your work. But, most of the times plug ins just adds up few lines of JS code or might include some external JS files hosted on other sites which will ultimately increase your page load time
  2. The plug in author might just vanish. Yes this happens a lot of time. Just go to WordPress.org and you will find tons of plug ins that are not actively maintained. Let’s look at HP’s tablets. No one has any idea what’s going to happen with them, if there will be more software, hardware or any support at all in the future. But HP is a proven, reliable company! And what about the Zune? Every vendor makes mistakes with products, and a freelance plugin dev is no better or worse than a major company at the end of the day. A real company might close it’s doors without warning, too!
  3. You got a new WordPress update and as soon as you did update your website, your website breaks. Yes, I keep on hearing this a lots of time. This can happen if the plug in is using depreciated WordPress functions. In such a case, your website becomes almost useless

You want to go plug in free? Here is what you shall start doing today

So, you feel that you have been doing this really wrong stuff for a long time now and want to move on and break up with your plug ins ? Great decision!! Let me guide you on how to break up with your plug ins and not feel back about it ?

Using ACF for almost everything

Yes, use ACF ( Advanced Custom Fields ) for everything. This amazing plug in by Elliot Condon helps you create an amazing backend which is very simple for your client to manage. You can download the plug in here. Now , let us see how to avoid using plug ins for each of the above cases that I have mentioned

1. Hero Slider / Home Page Slider
Just do this. Develop your entire HTML first. Make sure you develop Sliders in the HTML version. Once, the HTML is approved, go ahead and code custom fields to upload Images and text for each slider. With ACF repeater field, you can loop through the fields and set up repeat fields. Check the documentation here.

2. Upload a logo on WordPress backend
Seriously guys, you use a plug in for this? Just don’t . Put this small piece of code in your theme’s function.php file

3. Uploading a Favicon
This makes me laugh out loud now. No need too add a plug in for this pleaseeee !!! Just open your theme’s header.php and add this line of code in yoursection

4. Creating Custom Post Types
Now this is something that gets many people confused and yes I agree this can be a really tough job. But not that much . You can create Custom Post Types with and without taxonomies. Just add the following piece of code to your theme’s functions.php file. Below code will create a post type Book with all the functionalities of the normal post. You can even customise the functionalities that you want for each post type and generate your own Custom Post Type here

5. Google Analytics Code
This is simple. What a plug in does is it simply adds a small Google Analytics code into your theme’stag. So, just open your theme’s header.php and place the Google Analytics code given to you

6. Testimonials
Again, use the same approach as you would use for slider.

7. Granting Custom Website Access
Now, this is something very useful especially when you want to give grant access to your client, but you don’t want him to mess up with your theme’s code through Editor or you might not want him to add unnecessary plug ins. We have a solution ready for this. You just need to create a new user type and then create a new user account for a client and then give him the credentials 🙂 . Just copy paste the following code into your theme’s functions.php

So, these are the few possibilities where you can avoid using plug ins. There might be tons of such things which you can do by just coding and not use a plug in. If you have any such situation, write down in comments and we will help you out.
